Each year in the United States, hundreds of seniors die from the effects of hot weather. Heat stress (or hyperthermia) can affect older people more than others. Our Elders over the age of 65 may be at an increased risk of heat-related illnesses and need to be attended to in hot weather. If you have an Elder in your life who lives alone, has medical concerns or takes medication, it is important to be aware of the special care they may need as the temperature outside, and inside, goes up. Heat stress occurs when our body can no longer cool itself down and/or maintain a healthy temperature. Our bodies normally cool off by sweating. Sometimes sweating isn’t enough and our temperature continues to rise.
When it comes to our Elders, there are the added concerns of frailty, health conditions and reduced mobility. They may live alone and do not want to be “a bother”. As the temperature rises, elderly skin is not able to produce sweat and cool the body down as efficiently as it does in younger people. Additionally, certain medical conditions require medication be taken on a regular basis. But some medications can hinder their body’s ability to regulate temperature.
